Diabetes Epidemic Intensifies
Diabetes New Zealand has new predictions about the economic costs of the type 2 diabetes epidemic in New Zealand.
According to their new report, the cost of the type 2 diabetes epidemic to the health sector is likely to reach $1.6 billion a year by 2021. It will consume an estimated 15% of the governnment’s health budget, up from 3% of the current health budget.
The study also notes that actual prevalence of diabetes in 2006 is 19 percent higher than the Ministry of Health predicted it would be back in 2001.
