US: Soft drink tax for New York state?

The New York State Government is proposing 18 percent tax on non-diet soft drinks to help fight obesity by discouraging consumption.  This is one of its budget proposals.

Nutritionist, Marion Nestle agrees it is worth a try – after all it worked for cigarettes.  However, the beverage industry is bitterly opposed.
