09 Jul 2007: NZ: Asian teens - "an obesity timebomb"

Young Asian New Zealanders know less about healthy food choices and lifestyles than other kiwi teens.

An Auckland University study found that young Asian New Zealanders eat more junk food for lunch and after school compared to other young New Zealanders. They also think that skipping meals is a good way to loose weight.

“Young Asians need better access to information about food and health. We need parents and families and schools to be involved in interventions,” says researcher Shirin Foroughian.

This group is will face the same weight problems as other New Zealanders if nothing is done.
