A NSW Health report reveals that while the overall number of junk food ads has been decreasing, advertisers are now targeting the most popular children’s shows.

New figures highlight disturbing trends in junk food advertising
NSW researchers looked at children’s exposure to TV food advertising on Sydney Commercial Television in May 2007. They compared it to a similar study conducted a year before.
The proportion of junk food ads during the programmes most popular with 5-12 year olds has increased, the researchers found. Children are now exposed to more than 10 junk food ads an hour during peak periods.
In the light of this, NSW’s Minister for Health has called on the Australian Government to limit junk food advertising to children. Australian Health Ministers will discuss the issue at their conference in Sydney this week.
