Healthy food tick ‘failing low-income groups’
Research for the The Heart Foundation found that its ‘Pick the Tick’ programme is not meeting the needs of Maori, Pacific and low-income New Zealanders. These groups rarely use it to guide their food purchases because it is not used on low-cost food items.
The study made a number of recommendations to improve the marketing of healthy food. It suggests using simple mandatory indicators - like the “traffic light system” used in the United Kingdom - on all packaged food.
The Heart Foundation’s Ian Mathieson comments on the study and outlines what actions foundation is taking to improve healthy eating.
