Lobbying ‘has stopped junk food ad bans’
Direct lobbying by Australian food manufacturers has stopped politicians from supporting bans on junk food marketing to children.
Obesity expert Professor Boyd Swinburn told delegates at a consumer conference that “The big issue that we struggle against all the time is the lobbying influence of corporations on government…cutting back on lobbying was the single most powerful step food corporations could take to make a difference to obesity.”
He added that food companies could also reduce portion sales and stop selling junk food in schools.
