Junk food ad bans on the menu

Queensland’s premier Anna Bligh has released a discussion paper on whether there should be restrictions on junk food advertising on children’s television. It has three possible times for bans on junk food advertising:

  • Children’s peak viewing times – 7.00am to 9.00am and 5.00pm to 8.30pm weekdays and weekends

  • Children’s general viewing times – 7.00am to 8.30pm every day

  • Children’s viewing times when they are unlikely to be supervised – 7.00am to 9.00am and 3.00pm to 6.00pm weekdays and 7.00am to 6.00pm weekends.

SA to push on with junk food ad bans

The South Australian government has released a consultation paper with a range of options for limiting advertising of junk food to children, including a complete ban during children’s viewing times.

OPC calls for national approach to junk food advertising

The Obesity Policy Coalition has praised the South Australian and Queensland governments for their leadership in considering ways to protect young people from junk food advertising.

“Evidence shows that advertising influences the types of foods children want to eat and then pester their parents to buy. It creates real headaches for parents trying to instil healthy habits in their children.”
