03 Oct 2008: Australia: National survey shows children's weight still a concern

Snapshot shows that childhood overweight and obesity are still a concern

The latest National Children’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey shows that most 2-16 year old Australian children were of a healthy weight, but:

  • 17 per cent were overweight, 6 per cent obese and 5 per cent were underweight
  • 69 per cent of children met the physical activity guidelines of at least one hour of moderate or vigorous exercise each day
  • the proportion of children meeting the guidelines for fruit and vegetable intake declined with age
  • Commentators say levels of childhood obesity have remained largely unchanged over the past 10 years.
